September, 1998 THE LATEST SCOOP ON YOUR FARMLAND Volume 10, Number 3

Cotton Only 10 Days Late

Thanks to a return to normal weather during July, August and September of 1998, our tenant's cotton crops are only about 10 days late. As this is being written, both the Pima and the Acala cotton are scheduled to receive an application of Roundup herbicide during the first few days of October. This will help control the Field Bindweed and Johnson Grass which are the most serious weed problems in our growing area. The herbicide will also begin the defoliation process in the cotton. Our tenant will have Prep and Ginstar applied later in October to complete the defoliation. The cotton crops should be ready to harvest early in November.

Cotton Yield Uncertain

This year's unusual growing season has made cotton yield estimations very problematic. But since the harvest is not far off, we'll find out soon enough.

Milo Ready for Harvest

milo

The milo should be dry enough for harvest no later than October 5th. As our tenant has very little recent experience growing milo, he is unsure of the yield potential. The price for milo is very low and our tenant may receive less than $80 per ton for it.
