Wheat Planted Right on Schedule

Unlike during the past two years, our tenant got his wheat planted this past winter. The field contains 48 acres of Yecoro Rojo hard red winter wheat. It has been irrigated twice and it looks good. The wheat price is not exactly attractive currently, but we have hopes that this will improve.

Pima Cotton Acreage to Increase

Our tenant plans a major change to his cotton planting routine this year. Last year he planted about half his cotton acreage to Acala cotton and half to Pima cotton. This year he expects to plant Pima cotton exclusively, abandoning the less profitable and less productive Acala cotton entirely. His judgment is that the increased risks and costs inherent in Pima cotton are justified by the higher prices and yields available from Pima cotton.

Pre-plant Irrigation

This picture shows the pre-plant irrigation our tennant is applying to the Pima cotton field as this edition is beng prepared for publication. When the winter rains are heavy enough to provide sufficient planting moisture, this procedure is not necessary. This has not been the case this past rainy season. You can see the winter wheat on the right side of the picture.
