June, 1999 THE LATEST SCOOP ON YOUR FARMLAND Volume 11, Number 2

John Deere 9600 Combine

Wheat Yield Lower Than Projected

The wheat was harvested in early June. The yield was a bit disappointing. Our tenant usually achieves a wheat yield of at least 3 tons (100 bushels) per acre. This year, the wheat yield was only 2.7 tons (90 bushels) per acre. The protein content was above 14% and this mitigated the overall results somewhat. The price of wheat is very low. The high quality, high protein Yecoro Rojo wheat our tenant grew only brought about $105 per ton.

Pima Cotton Growing Well

Our tenant's Pima cotton is thriving in the good growing weather this year has provided. The insect and mite pressure is low and the crop looks good so far. Of course, June is much too early to make any forecasts about the crop's yield.

Low Pima Price

As this is being written, the price of Pima cotton is only about $.85 per pound. Our tenant expects that this situation will improve, and since the government loan program for Pima cotton provides a minimum price of about $.81 per pound, there is little point in selling any of the crop at this time.
