This year our tenant planted a different wheat variety, the rust-resistant Blanca Grande. This is a hard white winter wheat variety with superb milling qualities. The yield was slightly disappointing at 2.5 tons (83 bushels) per acre, but the protein content averaged 15% and the final price averaged $145 per ton. This compares very favorably with the 1.7 tons per acre and $120 per ton of last year.
Despite our tenant's problem with the irrigation pump, he was able to get his Pima cotton planted by April 22nd. The stand is not as perfect as it should be, but prospects for an acceptable cotton harvest are excellent. Our tenant also planted 8 rows of the Israeli-developed Hazera Pima/Acala hybrid cotton. You can see the difference in plant color and heighth in the picture below.
