Our tenant had a very good Yecorro Rojo wheat crop this year. The yield was just short of 3 tons (100 bushels) per acre. The protein content was well over 14%, making the wheat excellent for milling into flour. But the price of wheat is once again low. Our tenant will receive only about $114 per ton for this superior wheat.
Our tenant's Pima and Acala cotton crops are both off to a good start. The cold weather that affected so many of California's cotton farmers this spring was not a factor because our tenant did not begin planting until April 16th, as the weather was beginning to warm up. Since then, the weather has been unusually warm, allowing the cotton to grow and develop quickly. Insect pressure has been minimal.
This year's cotton price propects are mixed, to say the very least! The Pima price is remaining at around $.85-$.88 per pound, while the price for Acala cotton is less than $.50. Our tenant's potential for making any money in such a market environment relies almost entirely on the Federal Government radically increasing its farm subsidies.
