December, 2003 THE LATEST SCOOP ON YOUR FARMLAND Volume 15, Number 4

Disastrous Acala Cotton Yields

Our tenant's Acala cotton yield was much worse than expected, coming to only 1190 pounds per acre, or 2.38 bales. This poor result, combined with the rust-damaged wheat and the unusually high growing expenses of this past year, places our tenant's ability to continue in business in grave jeopardy. He has gone ahead with this winter's wheat planting and cotton land preparation, since there really wasn't any other sound choice available. An exceptionally wet winter could have prevented timely tillage and planting operations, making the situation even worse.

Listing, Planting, Rains

Our tenant has completed his winter ground work, including cotton listing and wheat planting. He has planted a new wheat variety this winter, Blanco Grande. It is a hard white winter wheat that has a much better resistance to rust. It is in high demand for flour milling. As you can see in the photo below, the wheat is just starting to grow at the end of December.

Rent Reduction

Due to the poor crop yields and high growing expenses, there is no year end cash surplus available to our tenant. All money paid out must be borrowed, including the rent. Therefore, our rents are lower than in years past.
