We in the United States held an election on November 7th. The Big Government Republicans lost to the Big Government Democrats. How grand...
The thing about the election was - neither major party was running on a Small Government platform. Neither major party will reduce government spending. Neither major party will reduce the hordes of Federal employees interfering with our lives.
We see a lot of pondering about Why the Republicans Lost. Well, why should they have won? During their 6 years of Presidential power, and their 12 years of Congressional power, what Federal departments have they closed? What Federal programs have they ended? How much have they reduced Federal spending? None. Why should any conservative or libertarian vote for these Republicans? The Republicans got what they deserved: defeat.
So now the Democrats will control both houses of Congress. Will they reduce Federal spending? Will they reduce Federal power? Will they do away with the notion of U.S. power as the arbiter of the world's affairs? Will they repeal the infamous USA PATRIOT Act? Will they rein in the Airport Nazis? Of course they won't. They are just as certain of the rightness of Pax Americana as are the Republicans. They are even more in favor of extreme government intrusion into your private business, so long as that intrusion doesn't concern your sex life or abortions. The change to Democratic Party power will not be a change for the better. All we have done is put a different engineer in the same locomotive, headed down the same track towards certain disaster.
We Americans are facing national bankruptcy and failure, whether we want to look at them directly or not. Our government is running a total budgetary deficit of hundreds of billions of Dollars per year. And that was true even during those few months of President Clinton's magical budget surpluses. Our foreign trade is running deficits of nearly a trillion Dollars per year. Our unfunded Federal entitlements amount to somewhere between 25 and 50 trillion Dollars. This dismal economic condition is not sustainable. It is going to lead to failure, and that failure will not only destroy our conceit about our national superiority. It will also ruin our economy and bring us the impoverishment we have unwittingly chosen for ourselves by continuing to elect these power-mad control freaks to office.
So, am I glad the Republicans lost? I sure am. Am I glad the Democrats won? Of course not. There is no Good News here. None at all.
